why are some infants and toddlers afraid of haircuts and some arent?
because i see them crying all the time, it doesnt hurt, so why? and then i see some children who could care less… but a few days ago i saw a kid who was way too old to be a baby about haircuts, really, what makes kids stricken with fear?
Reknowned child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim addresses this specific issue in his seminal work The Uses of Enchantment. Bettelheim found that nearly 55% of children under the age of five exhibit heightened fear in haircutting situations that involve exposure to shears. Only 10% of those whose hair was cut with electrical shavers showed a measurable increase in fear. Pairing these observations with analysis of the children’s dreams, Bettelheim determined the presence of a Jungian archetype Shears, an anthropomorphic scissor-like creature that appeared in children’s dreams and snipped off their genitalia. Although the children themselves did not bridge the gap between dream and reality, their subconscious kicked into gear when they were were exposed to the barber’s shears, resulting in a reaction of heightened fear.
