How to Choose Between Permanent and Semi or Demi Permanent Hair Color
Hi, I’m Jasen James, a professional hair colorist and your HairColorHelper. I’m here to answer your questions about coloring your hair at home. A lot of you want to know the difference between permanent and semi or demi permanent color.
Permanent color lifts the old color out of the hair and deposits in the new color. The other category, which I refer to as semi permanent, just deposits color on top of the hair.
There are advantages to both — what you use depends on where you want to go. If your hair is coarse, resistant or extra thick or if you want to completely cover grey hair, choose a permanent color. The formula is thicker and it won’t drip.
Permanent hair color lightens, darkens, covers gray and permanently changes your allover tone. When permanent hair color fades it often adopts a reddish or brassy tone, especially if your hair is black or brunette. There are strategies to combat the brass, so don’t let this deter you if your goals are to change your hair color or cover stubborn gray Hairs.
Semi permanent color is more translucent. It refreshes your existing color, darkens, and blends gray. So if you want to blend your grays (they’ll become shimmery, which is not a bad thing) use this. Or if you have natural or chemical highlights and want to save them — who wouldn’t? — then reach for a semi permanent formula. Since it doesn’t cover all the way you’ll be left with a slight dimension which occurs in nature. Also, your outgrowth won’t be as severe. So it’s lower maintenance.
You might also want to consider that Semi Permanent Hair Color is more gentle on the hair. It leaves it shinier too.
